Filipino Words You Should Add to Your Vocabulary

Filipino words

Filipino is not exactly the easiest language to learn, which is why we usually find foreigners struggling with it. We may laugh with them about their lack of knowledge of our lingua franca, but the truth is that there are so many Filipino words that even natives don’t know! We have so much to learn.

Considering that August is considered as our buwan ng wika, it’s time for us to expand our knowledge of the Filipino vocabulary. For starters, do you know that the word “biology” actually has a Filipino counterpart? It’s haynayan. Amplifiers are called panghibayo. And menstrual periods? They’re called karumalan.

Ever heard of haynayan (biology), karumalan (menstrual period), or panghibayo (amplifier)? If you haven’t heard of these words, then welcome to the club! Indeed, we can be strangers even to our own language. Here are some Filipino words and neologisms (recently invented words) that you may want to use.
